The Chin community are some of the most recent settlers to Melbourne’s western suburbs. On 14 October 2010 we held a launch of our expanded refugee legal and financial counselling service and invited leaders and members of the Chin community.
The refugee legal service evolved from the African legal service, which our centre established in 2007 to assist newly arrived clients of African refugee background with common legal issues such as infringements, tenancy, debt and consumer disputes.
The expansion of the service to include all persons of refugee background recognises the legal and financial difficulties faced by all persons of refugee background when they arrive in Australia. We see many clients from African nations such as Sudan, Liberia and Ethiopia, the Middle East, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and most recently Burma, including Chin, Karen and Karenni Burmese.
