How to get involved

Find out more about:

Becoming a volunteer

Our centre relies heavily on the work of legal and non-legal volunteers. At any one time, over 30 volunteers – comprising of local residents and workers, solicitors, barristers, law students and other tertiary students – help the centre.

We ask that volunteers give us a minimum commitment of twelve months.

If you would like to volunteer at the centre, please complete the Volunteer Application Form and email it along with your resume to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If you have any further questions, you can contact our office on 9689 8444.

Please note, demand for volunteer positions may vary and we cannot always reply to your request. When there is a position available and you are a suitable candidate, we will contact you.

Day volunteers

Day volunteers are usually rostered for one half day per week. They assist with administrative and reception work, referrals and legal research.

Night volunteers

The centre offers an Evening Advice & Referral Service every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7pm to 8pm.

Night volunteers are qualified lawyers who are rostered on one evening per fortnight. The night service is also greatly assisted by non-legal volunteers who provide administrative support.

Making a donation

Please contact us on 9689 8444 if you wish to make a donation. Donations over $2.00 are tax deductable.

Funding a project

Our projects are largely funded by philanthropic and government grants.

We are always looking for funders for our new and existing projects.

If you are interested in funding a project, please contact us on 9689 8444.

Pro bono law firms

Many of our services would not be possible without the expert assistance of our pro bono law firm partners.

Our current partnerships include:

  • Mallesons and HWL Ebsworth Lawyers, who provide solicitors on a weekly basis for our Refugee Legal Clinic.
  • Russell Kennedy Lawyers, who accept a generous number of referrals for clients with a range of legal problems, including discrimination and employment law matters. In 2010, Russell Kennedy also provided a secondee lawyer to establish the refugee legal clinic.
  • Allens Arthur Robinson, who undertake representations at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for our Refugee Tenancy Legal Clinic.

If your firm would like to get involved, please contact us on 9689 8444.

Advocacy and Partnerships

We work in partnership with community organisations, ombudsman schemes and regulatory authorities, private businesses and governments to address systemic issues and advocate for social change.

Our current social change projects include:

  • Vietnamese communities and the law
  • Refugee housing in Melbourne’s west
  • Utilities, telecommunications and disadvantaged consumers
